Background:Painful inflammatory lesions of the skin or mucous membranes, usually associated with non-inflammatory lesions, are common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Aim:To compare the safety of Voltaren and Voltaren Ointment and the effect of Voltaren Ointment on the inflammatory lesions of the skin of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or systemic sclerosis (SMS).
Methods:In a prospective, placebo-controlled, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter study, the efficacy and tolerability of Voltaren and Voltaren Ointment, at the doses of 2,400, 2,800, and 2,400 mg, for up to 12 weeks, were evaluated.
Results:The clinical efficacy, tolerability, and safety of Voltaren and Voltaren Ointment was comparable to Voltaren Ointment and was not associated with a significantly higher number of adverse events. The incidence of adverse reactions was significantly higher with Voltaren Ointment (1.4% vs. 0.7%, p <0.001).
Conclusion:The safety and tolerability of Voltaren and Voltaren Ointment in patients with SLE or SMS are comparable.
